Though he’s considered the godfather of modern ambient music, Brian Eno has been playing with light as an art medium nearly as long as he’s experimented with sound.
Conceived by Eno as “visual music,” 77 Million Paintings is an evolving sound and image collection born from his continuous exploration with light and the aesthetic possibilities of generative software (for a smaller versions check out his Bloom, Trope, and Air apps for the iPhone).
With the incorporation of his Lumen London company, Eno first created 77 Million Paintings in 2006 to bring art to the increasing number of flat panel TV’s and monitors that sit darkened and underutilized. By using multiple-monitor configurations that are easily manipulated and controlled, Lumen is now showing large-scale installations of 77 Million Paintings in galleries and public spaces around the world.
Moogfest is honored to host the exhibition of Brian Eno’s remarkable 77 Million Paintings as a part of this year’s continually expanding palette of festival offerings. This exhibition will mark the first installation of 77 Million Paintings in the United States, outside of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Previous 77 Million Paintings exhibitions throughout the world have included installations at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale, and the Sydney Opera House.
77 Million Paintings will be exhibited at the YMI Cultural Center , a National Historic Landmark in the heart of downtown Asheville. The YMI Cultural Center’s auditorium will be transformed for 77 Million Paintings, creating a thoroughly immersive experience for those attending the exhibition.
Opening on October 28, the first day of Moogfest 2011, the exhibition will continue beyond the festival weekend until November 30, 2011. During Moogfest weekend the exhibition will only be open to Moogfest pass holders but will be open to the general public starting November 2, 2011. 77 Million Paintings is separately ticketed event.
